Phyl will be 93 on January 10th.
Her son Roger was in the habit of telephoning every day from Hawaii and one day was unable to get an answer. He alerted the emergency keyholder who found Phyl on the bedroom floor. She had suffered a stroke and was rushed to hospital. After having been in hospital for a while, on Friday Oct 30th the family were told that she was being treated as a critical patient nearing end of life. Prior to this she could not talk and refused to have feeding tubes inserted but eventually was coaxed by family to do so and is now taking nourishment with the result that her situation has improved.

Now she can talk a bit, is receptive to communication and has those practical thoughts like is the cat ok and have you cancelled the milk!

Long term however she will need full time medical care and there is some doubt whether or not she will be able to return to Pulteney Gardens.

We wish her well for her 93rd birthday wherever she may be.

    update 26th Nov 2009November 29, 2009 @ 10:40am
Phyl has been moved to St Martin's Hospital and is in the Sulis ward. She went there on Sunday last, and has settled in after the move. Today she was 'up' most of the day in a chair, which is about as much as she can manage at the moment, but very much 'in relationship' with whoever is with her (albeit non verbal) and aware of the occasional humorous moment.
    Regards for now
    Roger Arnold.

    Update November 23rd 2009 November 29, 2009 @ 10:46am
On behalf of my mother Phyl, can I express her thanks to the Past Players Association for her Christmas card and Gift. This has already been put to good use as a contribution towards some additional nightwear etc for her hospital stay. Phyl was transferred at the weekend to St Martin's Hospital (Sulis Unit) to hopefully undergo rehabilitation.
    Thanks again and best regards.
    Peter Arnold.

Roger Arnold tells us that Phyl moved on Dec 17th to Room 40, Woodside Nursing Home , Bathwick Hill, Bath. She would be happy to see friends during the visiting times which are anytime after 10.00am daily. Her 'recovery' can only be described as minimal, but she has certainly made it out of hospital, and given the serious nature of her condition when she went it, this is a fantastic achievement.
